Georgia writes out the shift schedule, partly because no one else is willing to do it.

“Why do two people need to be on a shift at once?” Nic complains, peering over her shoulder.

“It’s not like y’all have better things to do,” Georgia points out. “If you were in Mary Alice’s situation, wouldn’t you want some protection? Not to mention, this must be a very big shock to her.”

It is, and it’s not.

Before coming on the ship, I didn’t believe in the supernatural. Unless you count God, I guess. But not vampires and werewolves. And now, I’m still not sure what to believe. Part of me thinks that what Georgia and everyone else is saying is true: they’re all some type of supernatural creature from a different plane of existence. But another part of me doesn’t want to believe it. It makes my own existence feel so small and insignificant. So mundane and ordinary.

Sure, angels exist, which is cool. But evil supernatural creatures—zombies, cultists, demons, and the like—also exist. Watching them on television is entertaining, watching them try to kill me is not. This is a situation where the cons outweigh the pros, and if I had it my way, the supernatural would not exist at all. But of course, the universe does not work according to my own wishes. In a world where monsters exist, who am I? Just a mortal girl.

Sure, there are stories where normal girls discover magic, fall in love, go on adventures, and all that. But let’s be real—half of them only survive because they have hidden powers, or they’re loved by a sexy supernatural being. I’m a nobody. Does this mean my survival rate is slim to none?

There are still doubts in my mind about all this, don’t get me wrong. I’m aware this could all be an elaborate ruse, but as I continue to talk to Georgia and the others, my doubts begin to shrink. Just a little bit.

Nic says, “There are a ton of books and movies and shows on with supernatural creatures. It’s not like Mary Alice hasn’t been exposed to them.”

“Exposed, maybe, but the lore is all over the place. Let’s face it, none of the popular movies are the least bit accurate to what we truly are,” argues Georgia. I like her, despite myself. “Instead of complaining, Nic, why don’t you help by joining the cleaning crew? You’re not on shift to watch Mary Alice this weekend. Today, Jenna and I will be handling it.”

“Oh, really?” Jenna perks up. “Where are we going?”

“The morgue should have an autopsy done by this afternoon, excluding toxicology reports. We can check it out,” Georgia says, turning to me. “Dr. Mathers expedited Todd’s autopsy last night. It might shed some light on what’s happening. Don’t worry—we won’t be looking at the body or anything.”

“Thank you,” I say, a blanket statement for everything she’s done so far to help me.

Georgia just pats my arm. “Don’t thank me yet. Not until we figure out what’s really going on.
